Taking its name from the flaxen tones that lend an atmosphere of luminous calm, Bungalow Blonde is a charmingly characterful residence resting within its winding Waverley streetscape.

Bungalow Blonde underwent a significant transformation, addressing the issues of a structurally unstable first-floor addition and balcony. The renovation involved a complete overhaul of the upper level, enhancing safety and functionality by rebuilding the balcony and adding extra bedrooms while simultaneously opening up the lower level to improve natural light and outdoor connections, resulting in a cohesive and inviting living environment.

Anchored by a dedication to preserving a historical language that converses with the streetscape, the new architectural intervention masterfully balances the client’s playful spirit with respect for the home’s origins. Low-pitched roofs at the front maintain its characterful presence while inside, a sun-lacquered interior transformation has been forged at the rear. By lowering the living spaces to ground level and introducing soaring ceilings alongside a cylindrical staircase connecting the two levels, the design maximises natural light and fosters a seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

Soft white bagged brick for the lower level and lightweight painted timber for the upper level creates a harmonious blend of old and new, while playful openings ensure privacy and brightness. The result is a family home that surprises with its warm, airy spaces and inviting garden, all underpinned by carefully selected materials that add both charm and interest.
